How To Carve Your Own Rubber Stamp

Writer's picture: Jo PalmerJo Palmer

There are a few different ways that you can hand carve your own rubber stamps. The most common way is to use carving tools to carve away at the rubber. Another way is to use a sharp knife to carve away the rubber.

The first thing that you need to do is to find a piece of rubber that is the right size and shape for your design. You can either buy a sheet of rubber or recycle an old rubber stamp. If you are recycling an old stamp, make sure that it is clean and free of any ink or other residue. Low-cost alternatives include flip flops and rubber erasers. Once you have your piece of rubber, you will need to trace your design onto the rubber. You can use a pencil or a permanent marker for this. Generally in the designs available at stickerbeez.com or beezbasement.com you would carve away the white areas.

Once your design is traced onto the rubber, you will need to start carving away at the rubber. If you are using a carving tool, start by making small cuts into the rubber. You can then begin to carve away larger pieces of the rubber. If you are using a knife, you will need to be very careful not to cut yourself. Start by making small incisions into the rubber and then begin to carve away larger pieces.

As you are carving, you will need to be careful not to carve away too much of the rubber. You want your design to be visible, but you also don’t want to make the rubber too thin. If you make the rubber too thin, it will be more difficult to stamp with.

Once you have finished carving your design, you will need to clean off the rubber. You can do this by using a soft cloth or a brush. Once the rubber is clean, you can then start stamping with your new rubber stamp!
